• Our work

Eurodiaconia links diaconal actors to examine social needs, develop ideas and influence policies impacting Poverty and Social Exclusion, Social and Health Care Services and the Future of Social Europe.

Eurodiaconia also provides a platform for transnational networking and best practice sharing.

  • Our vision

As the leading network for diaconal work in Europe, we look to develop dialogue and partnership between members and influence and engage with the wider society.  We do this to enable inclusion, care and empowerment of the most vulnerable and excluded and ensure dignity for all.

  • Our goals

We aim to see a positive social change in Europe through:

Praxis, enabling membership engagement and partnerships

Advocacy, creating a network of competence to impact policies at European and national level

Identity and values, supporting the development of approaches and thinking on Diaconia in Europe today

Members invited to share experiences on migration and services

September 7 2010

Following our member surveys and various discussions among our working groups, Eurodiaconia has recognized that migration is a topic which impacts many aspects of its members’ work today and it will continue to do so as migration increases.

Following discussions with CCME (The Churches Commission for Migrants in Europe), together we have identified that access to social and health services for migrants is an area that Eurodiaconia could work on. However, before we start any concrete work on this topic, we need to better understand how our members approach the topic of migration from the point of view of service providers in order to know what useful input Eurodiaconia can make.

We would therefore ask you to take 15 minutes to answer these questions and send your answers to Catherine at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 1st November. The conclusions of this short questionnaire will help us plan any future work on migration and activities we could carry out to support members, such as additional seminars or partnership building.

Diakonie Austria calls for urgent action to tackle staff shortages in care sector
6 August 2010

Diakonie Austria and its partners held a press conference on August 4th to call on policy makers to take action to attract more people to work in the social care sector. Diakonie Austria, Caritas, the Red Cross, Hilfswerk and Volkshilfe Diakonie highlighted the many vacancies in the sector, the missed employment opportunities this shows, and advocated a package of policies to tackle the problem.

A key change needed is increased funding to service providers to enable them to pay better wages. Increased training opportunities and support for care staff are also essential. Michael Chalupka, Director of Diakonie Austria, stressed the importance of education in the sector, broadening the skills and knowledge base that care workers receive, to raise the attractiveness of working in the sector. He also spoke of the non-recognition of qualifications obtained abroad being a barrier to employment.

Input from members invited for paper on demographic change
Eurodiaconia is developing a policy paper on demographic change and social challenges and would like to hear from members about work they have done on the topic. The document will outline Eurodiaconia's position and present proposals to decision makers to tackle issues raised.

Examples of useful material would be policy positions on the main challenges for society due to demographic change and how to face them, the role of Diaconia, or examples of services that are meeting those challenges. Any documentation should be sent electronically to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by the end of August.

Our members’ voices come through in European Union Agency’s report

19 July 2010

Eurodiaconia's members voices on the social impact of the crisis came through in Eurofound final draft report on ‘managing household debts’. Following on Eurodiaconia’s report on “the social cost of the crisis: even more in need and more needed”, Eurodiaconia was recently invited to speak to the Eurofound experts workshop on “Managing debts: social service provision in the EU” about the social impact of the crisis as experienced by our members. Following this workshop, Eurodiaconia report has been now quoted in Eurofound final draft report, underlying our members’ experience of an increased demand for services, especially debt counselling, emergency financial support, and employment advice.

Eurofound, the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, is a European Union body, working to contribute to the planning and design of better living and working conditions in Europe. Its role is to provide information, advice and expertise for key actors in the field of EU social policy such as employers, EU policy makers, and governments. The final version of this report will be posted on the Eurofound and European Year 2010 websites later this summer.

Eurodiaconia will be preparing a third follow-up report on the social impact of the crisis on our members in early 2011. Please contribute to it so that together we can continue to work for your voice to be heard.
