• Our work

Eurodiaconia links diaconal actors to examine social needs, develop ideas and influence policies impacting Poverty and Social Exclusion, Social and Health Care Services and the Future of Social Europe.

Eurodiaconia also provides a platform for transnational networking and best practice sharing.

  • Our vision

As the leading network for diaconal work in Europe, we look to develop dialogue and partnership between members and influence and engage with the wider society.  We do this to enable inclusion, care and empowerment of the most vulnerable and excluded and ensure dignity for all.

  • Our goals

We aim to see a positive social change in Europe through:

Praxis, enabling membership engagement and partnerships

Advocacy, creating a network of competence to impact policies at European and national level

Identity and values, supporting the development of approaches and thinking on Diaconia in Europe today

About us

 Who we are

“Diakonia” is Greek for “service”. In the biblical tradition "diaconia" is service for and with people in need.
Diaconia means working for reconciliation:

  • bringing help where it is needed
  • demanding justice in situations of exclusion
  • advocating for those whose voice is not heard

Eurodiaconia is an ecumenical federation of churches, non-statutory welfare organizations and NGOs in Europe operating at national and international level. Our members are rooted in Christian faith within the traditions of the Reformation as well as in the Anglican and Orthodox traditions. We network diaconal and social work institutions and church communities and co-operate with civil society partners and work for quality of life in a social Europe. We also further renewed theological thinking about diaconia. We engage in learning processes, exchanging knowledge and service among our members across national and confessional boundaries.

Eurodiaconia was born when two European diaconal organisations merged in 1996: Eurodiaconia and the European Federation for Diaconia. The European Federation for Diaconia was founded in 1922 following the inspiration of Lutheran Archbishop Nathan Söderblom. The Eurodiaconia parent organisation was founded in 1992 to make diaconal organisations heard by European Union institutions.

Eurodiaconia has its office in Brussels. It represents European ecumenical co-operation between the diaconal structures and activities in many Churches and church-related organisations in both Eastern and Western Europe.
