• Our work

Eurodiaconia links diaconal actors to examine social needs, develop ideas and influence policies impacting Poverty and Social Exclusion, Social and Health Care Services and the Future of Social Europe.

Praxis, enabling membership engagement and partnerships

Advocacy, creating a network of competence to impact policies at European and national level

Christmas Greetings from Eurodiaconia!

14 December 2009

Right now, all eyes are on Copenhagen where the world’s leaders will meet to try and mitigate the impact of climate change on the world. One of the concerns there is the impact climate change has on the poorest in the world, particularly in the majority world of the South. It is heartening to see poverty being brought to the fore in this debate, and we wait to see if any real progress will be made. But it reminds me that in all we do, whether it be re-regulating the economy, developing new methods of industrial production or redeveloping cities, we must think of the impact that this may have on those who live in the most desperate need, who live with uncertainty about their livelihoods, homes and families. Each action we take has an impact – and often it is those who are at the margins of society who suffer the most.

2010 is the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and there is much talk about the political legacy of this year. We do need to ensure that approaches to combat poverty and social exclusion are mainstreamed into other policy areas – such as environmental concerns and economic growth. Eurodiaconia will be calling for this in the European Commissions’ Europe 2020 consultation. But perhaps we have to also think about our personal response and legacy. Can we, as individuals, express our own concerns about poverty and exclusion and show the role of diaconia in caring and empowering those at the margins of our society? Can we “love our neighbours as ourselves” and show the compassion of Christ for those who suffer the most?

As we take some holidays over the Christmas and New Year period it is a chance to reflect and think about how we can show this – both in our organisations and as individuals – and enter 2010 with a renewed commitment to fighting poverty and social exclusion and with the image of the Christ Child, born in poverty, yet the salt and light of the world. May you and your families have every blessing this Christmas time!

Eurodiaconia Secretary General Heather Roy

Please note that the Eurodiaconia secretariat in Brussels will be closed starting 21 December 2009 and reopen on 4 January 2010.
