• Our work

Eurodiaconia links diaconal actors to examine social needs, develop ideas and influence policies impacting Poverty and Social Exclusion, Social and Health Care Services and the Future of Social Europe.

Eurodiaconia also provides a platform for transnational networking and best practice sharing.

  • Our vision

As the leading network for diaconal work in Europe, we look to develop dialogue and partnership between members and influence and engage with the wider society.  We do this to enable inclusion, care and empowerment of the most vulnerable and excluded and ensure dignity for all.

  • Our goals

We aim to see a positive social change in Europe through:

Praxis, enabling membership engagement and partnerships

Advocacy, creating a network of competence to impact policies at European and national level

Identity and values, supporting the development of approaches and thinking on Diaconia in Europe today

Diaconia Austria celebrates the Day of the Volunteer

24 June 2011

On Friday 17 June all across Austria the “Day of the Volunteer" was celebrated as part of the European Year of Volunteering. It was initiated by the Federal Association of Free Welfare (Caritas, Diaconia, Relief, Red Cross and help people) and in cooperation with ORF and the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Diakoniewerk is active in 3 regions in 10 locations with a diverse programme of voluntary activity. The aim of this day is to show what a valuable asset volunteering is in caring and supporting people. They wanted to have a day to spark people’s interest and curiosity in volunteering. It was also an opportunity to make contacts with potential volunteers and present Diakoniewerk with all it has to offer.

The DW der EKD is the welfare organisation of the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD). The Diaconia stands for the social work of all the Evangelical churches in Germany.  The organisation consists of the (regional associations of) the 20 member churches of EKD and Free Churches with their diaconal institutes as well as about 80 professional associations working in the areas of  social work, healthcare and youth  and childrens work. The Diaconia is actively involved in different working areas in Germany: elderly care, employment and unemployment, youth work, disability work, family supportm health and migration.

Diakonie_Patientenverfgung_41270More than 28 000 independent institutions differing in size and legal entity put about 444 0000 fulltime or part time employees to work. The diaconal work is also supported by  around 3 500 selfhelp groups, 18 000 Church communities and 400 000 volunteers .

The funding/financing of diaconal work depends on the individual tasks. The services are financed by the individual contributions of the users, State subsidies, Church taxes and/or donations. Medical care and home care is mostly financed by healthcare insurances. The other social services are mostly supported by tax money. Diakonie_Patientenverfgung_41193

The diaconal organisation in Germany was set up in 1848 in Hamburg by the theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern.  In 1848 the Central office for national missions of the German Evangelical Churches was founded and throughout Germany instututions, schools and social organisations started to develop.
