In line with the aim of linking its members to serve for solidarity and justice, Eurodiaconia intends to bridge the gap between the concrete reality of its members' experience in the area of poverty and social exclusion and EU policies.
To do so, Eurodiaconia
- monitors EU policies and strategies in the area of poverty and social exclusion
- takes part in the consultation and participation mechanisms at EU level
- advocates on EU policies, drawing on its members' experience and expertise
- equips its members to take part in the process at national level
- networks with Institutions, NGOs, to share ideas and good practices
Eurodiaconia is currently concentrating its work on the follow-up of the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy's objective of inclusive growth, and the process of the European Platform against poverty. It also works on specific issues such as the impact of the financial and economic crisis, financial inclusion and over-indebtedness, homelessness, child and family poverty, and other issues of interest to its members.

From 2010’s hopes to today’s realities: update on the “European Platform against poverty” |
|
11 October 2012
Launched in 2010, the European Platform against Poverty was to be the “new” European framework of action for social inclusion, aiming toward inclusive growth for the European Union, in the framework of the Europe 2020 strategy.
Today, almost two years later, what has happened? As the financial, economic and social crisis persists and Member States struggle deeply with unemployment and poverty levels, what has the EPAP accomplished, what is the way forward?
Eurodiaconia secretariat propose a briefing to clarify the state of play of what the EPAP is, what are its past achievements and future potentials. To read the briefing please click here.

Eurodiaconia calls for European Commitment to Child Well-being in joint statement |
|
10 October 2012
Eurodiaconia together with seven other NGOs wrote a statement in response to the EPSCO Council Conclusions on Preventing and Tackling Child Poverty and Promoting Children’s Well-being which were adopted last week. In particular we welcomed the Council’s call to focus on promoting children’s well-being, alongside actions to reduce child poverty. • To read the statement click here • To read the EPSCO Council Conclusions click here.
We hope that the forthcoming European Commission Recommendation will ensure member states embrace a comprehensive approach to child poverty and child wellbeing and endorse practical mechanisms through which its implementation can be monitored across the EU. |

Eurodiaconia adopts position on child poverty and social exclusion |
|
5 October 2012
This week Eurodiaconia’s Supervisory Board met in Rome and adopted a position paper on child poverty and social exclusion. The publishing of the paper is very timely, given that the EPSCO Council (Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs) just yesterday adopted Conclusions on “Preventing and tackling child poverty and promoting children’s well-being”. The position paper will be used to give input into the European Commission’s upcoming Recommendation on Child Poverty which is to be finalised at the beginning of 2013.
The policy paper is accompanied by a briefing for members which gives more background information on the topic as well as suggestions for how members can take action on the issue.
We would also like to thank those members who gave us feedback on the policy paper and who gave us content for the paper during meetings.

EPSCO to adopt conclusions on child poverty |
|
01 October 2012
The Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) is to adopt conclusions on preventing and tackling child poverty and social exclusion and promoting children's well-being, on 4th October. These conclusions are based on the Social Protection Committee's work which has involved stakeholders such as Eurodiaconia in this work.
Eurodiaconia initial assessment is to welcome these draft conclusions as they bring a strong accent on child well-being, and other related policies such as housing, health, education, reconciliation of work and family life. Eurodiaconia also welcomes the recognition made of the hight pressure on service provision to families and children in these times of crisis as the conclusions recognise that“key services and policies supporting families and children have started to be affected by budget cuts in a number of EU countries”.
Finally, Eurodiaconia welcomes the call to Member States call to consider child-investment as long-term investment and to aim to “ensure adequate and sustainable investment in child and family support, (… [with an]) adequate balance between universal and targeted policies".

21 September 2012
The Class Centre for Labour and Social Studies recently published a short pamphlet 'Why Inequality Matters' presenting the key findings of the book 'The Spirit Level - Why Equality is Better for Everyone'. The document shows that only by narrowing income differences we can improve the social and psychological well-being of whole populations.
