Breakfast Roundtable: Tackling youth unemployment in Europe

Date(s) - 29/09/2022
8:00 am - 9:30 am

Eurodiaconia is delighted to invite you to our upcoming Breakfast Roundtable on Youth Access to Employment hosted by MEP Leila Chaibi, Vice-Chair of the EMPL Committee at the European Parliament on September 29th from 8 – 9:30 am (CET).

Youth have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 crisis, with employment rates falling, mental health and well-being worsening, and the risk of poverty and social exclusion increasing. Notably, youth unemployment in the EU is 2.5 times higher than the general unemployment rate, with non-standard work rates remaining very high. At the same time, high rates of NEETs (young people not in employment, education or training) are also widely spread across Europe.

In this context, the decision of the European Union to declare 2022 the European Year of Youth is very timely. It signals the need to reflect on the perspectives of young people in Europe, as well as to focus on European, national, regional and local policies and legislative proposals that create opportunities for young people across the EU.

During this Roundtable, we are excited to welcome our host MEP Leila Chaibi, alongside Mr. Pablo Cornide, Policy Officer at the European Commission, and Ms. Manon Deshayes, Policy Officer at the European Youth Forum, to reflect on their ability to address challenges that youth are facing across Europe. Finally, we will bring testimonies and listen to Eurodiaconia members’ experience working with NEETS and disadvantaged youth, with the aim of identifying best practices.
