The European Commission has just announced the launch of an award for social innovation addressing the mobility of older people. The EU’s population is ageing, with figures estimating that there will be 75 million elderly people in Europe in 2020, and 88 million in 2030. This large number requires a reconsideration of existing mobility systems which support independent living so that older citizens can continue to fully participate in social activities and services.
In light of this, developing or improving related mobility solutions is a priority, and a chance to bring new opportunities. The European Commission has announced a contest to develop innovative and sustainable mobility solutions for older people (65+). The solutions submitted – likely to combine technological, social and behavioural features – must be implemented for several months during the contest period.
The jury will assess the work and progress made by the applicants during an implementation period of at least 5 months between the opening of the prize. Applicants will also have to demonstrate that their solution can be scaled-up and replicated in similar or even different contexts.
The prize will be launched during the “Opening up to an era of social innovation” conference in Lisbon on 27-28 November 2017.
The deadline for submissions is February 2019 (the exact deadline will be specified in due course).
