Our member in Hungary, Magyarorszagi Reformatus Egyhaz (The Reformed Church of Hungary) is exploring a new field of work and providing jobs through agricultural projects. The reformed congregations in Kiszombor and Maroslele are exploring a new initiative entitled the ‘Church Farmers Market Network’; which they are proud to describe as a congregation based on vegetable and crop production.

The aim of the project is to improve the financial situation of local churches through working the land and producing crops in rural areas of Hungary. As well as making good use of land owned by the Reformed Church in Hungary’s parishes for planting and growing, the ‘Church Farmers Market Network’ has also created new jobs in the district of Csongrád near the Romanian-Serbian border for participants church’s agricultural projects.

Vegetables, jams and cheeses are then being sold in local markets, and the proceeds are to go to the upkeep of the churches and their projects. What’s more, the project organisers feel that the initiative can provide not only a source of vegetables and crops to share at local markets, but also can encourage residents and visitors in Kiszombor and Maroslele to create new contacts and help the congregations thrive.
