lux presidency

On 1 July, Luxembourg started its Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will last until the end of the year. Unlike other institutional bodies such as the European Commission or the European Parliament, the Council of the EU is not presided over by a single person, but by an EU Member State.

In the Council of the EU, the Ministers of all 28 EU Member States come together to discuss issues related to agricultural policy, economic policy, social and employment policy, etcetera. Until the end of the year, the ministers from Luxembourg will not only chair the meetings of the different Council configurations, but also have the opportunity to shape the agenda and decide on items which will be discussed. Eurodiaconia has therefore sent a letter with key messages to the Ambassador of the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the EU, as well as to the Minister for Social Affairs and Employment. The letter accentuates the importance of increasing the social dimension of the EU agenda through key processes such as the European Semester, as well as the need to promote a social economy and a social investment approach.
