The European Parliament today, on the 23rd of June 2022, approved a reinforcement of EU migration programmes to help member states deal with urgent migration and border management measures. The purpose of this proposal is to help pay for the first reception and registration costs of people fleeing Ukraine as a result of Russian aggression in the majority of impacted member nations. It is one of the components of the Commission’s proposed support package worth €400 million, which is itself a part of the EU’s €1 billion commitment to the “Stand Up For Ukraine” program.

The following topics are covered by the decision:

  • Reinforcement of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), with a total of €99.8 million in commitment appropriations and €76 million in payment appropriations. The money is used to make sure that refugees from Ukraine receive a suitable first reception, food, shelter, sanitation, clothing, medicines, family tracing, legal and translation support, psycho-social support, and other specialized services that lead to their registration in one of the Member States.
  • The strengthening of the Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI) for a payment allocation of €100 million. This will make it possible for procedures like identification, fingerprinting, registration, security checks, medical examinations, and vulnerability screening of citizens of other countries to be carried out smoothly at or close to the external borders. It will also make it possible to meet any immediate reception needs that may arise during these processes.
