Head of Diakonie Österreich (Diaconia Austria) Michael Chalupka deplored the new law on the national asylum system approved by the Austrian Parliament. The law is officially supposed to regulate the integration of refugees in Austria.
Mr Chalupka said: “This new model could have a major impact not only on Austria but on the entire European asylum system, as less wealthy EU member states could choose to adopt the same model, putting an end to any attempt of social approach to this humanitarian emergency”.
Under this Regulation, Austria risks to pull itself out of providing humanitarian assistance to new refugees, and de facto to ignore the right of asylum.
