Our member the Institute for Public Theology and diaconal Ethics part of Diakonie Österreich, published a new essay titled “A good life with dementia”.
About 130,000 people are currently living with dementia in Austria. That figure is expected to rise to 260,000 by the end of 2050. So far, there are not effective treatments available against dementia, and drug treatment can only alleviate the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
Both the figures and the limited treatment options make dementia one of the major health and social challenges of modern societies.
The research is aimed at analysing the ethical challenges linked to dementia from a Protestant prospective. It mainly focuses on the ways quality of life and self-determination of people living with dementia can be encouraged, as well as bioethical issues and patient assistance models.
