The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has recently released a report on child poverty titled “Combating child poverty: an issue of fundamental rights”.
The report stresses the alarming situation of child poverty in the EU. The publication’s findings show that in 2018 almost 25 million children – one in four – are at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights highlights that poverty deprives children of educational opportunities, access to health care, adequate food or housing, family support, childcare and protection from violence. The report also shows that some groups such as children with a migration or Roma background are more at risk of poverty and social exclusion.
After outlining the situation with figures, the report gives some recommendations to the EU institutions and its Member States in order to address the urgent issue of child poverty. Among other recommendations, the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights is presented as a way to ensure that all children have the right to be protected from poverty.
Eurodiaconia is also active on advocating for children at risk of poverty. As part of the EU Alliance for Investing in Children, we have recently co-signed a statement on the necessity that the Post 2020 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) must invest in Children and aim to end child poverty.
